2021 Excellence in Metallography Award


 

The 2021 Excellence in Metallography Award has been selected, and this year's winning paper is "Artificial Intelligence Applied to the Development and Characterization of PM Components" by Simon Gélinas*, Gabrielle Laramée and Carl Blais, Laval University. The paper was selected from among the highly qualified manuscripts that were presented at the PowderMet2021 conference in Orlando and critically evaluated for the prestigious award. The paper is available for download on the APMI website. It is also included in Advances in Powder Metallurgy & Particulate Materials—2021The authors will be officially recognized during PowderMet2022 in Portland, Oregon, June 12–15, 2022.

The Excellence in Metallography Award, was established to recognize individual(s) responsible for excellence in the metallography used in scientific and technical written communications. The award is for papers presented and submitted for publication from the annual technical conference organized by the Metal Powder Industries Federation in cooperation with APMI International; to enhance the quality of technology transfer in the PM literature by increasing the utilization of metallography in papers submitted for the annual technical conference; and, to sustain and promote the science and technology of metallography which is fundamental to powder metallurgy products, processes, and materials.

Paper excellence is measured using a system of four quality standards: (1) Technical content-relevance and applicability of the project in relation to solving a problem and/or providing information to support the ideas set forth in the paper; (2) Quality and uniqueness of sample preparation including proper use of etchants and microscopy methods; (3) Quality of photomicrograph(s) (photographic techniques; scale markers; etc.; and (4) Has long-term value.
