Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Hosts Their first PM Industry Day Event
On February 14, 2019, parts making and powder producing member companies of the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) were invited to a Powder Metallurgy (PM) Industry Day at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) North American Headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The event was coordinated between FCA and MPIF to showcase PM technology to FCA’s in-house design and engineering teams.
The event was well received and truly an educational experience for the FCA employees who attended. Event attendees were excited to learn more about the PM industry, and some stated that they were previously unaware of the value and innovation available from PM technologies. Attendees were able to ask questions of PM experts and had a chance to see and touch parts that they had not seen before.
Thirty-five PM parts and powder producers representing such technologies as conventional PM, metal injection molding, and metal additive manufacturing exhibited their products and showcased their capabilities. Thousands of parts were available to the 800+ FCA employees who attended, representing various departments such as powertrain, chassis, body, electronics, controls, engineering systems, sensors, computer-aided engineering, materials, chemistry, safety, quality, MOPAR, and many others.
From the exhibiting companies’ perspectives, one company stated that the event provided “a rare opportunity for some of our Tier 2 constituents to get firsthand insight about where the automotive industry may be going,” while another said that it was “an amazing experience and [provided] an opportunity to grow our business.”
